A while back, I did a whole bunch of work for some action figure packaging. DC UNIVERSE VS. MASTER OF THE UNIVERSE 2-PACK ACTION FIGURES. You can see some of the other postings here. I usually wait to post stuff until I get the published book, or in this case, the manufactured action figures in packaging. But since I know they've been out for some time, I'll post them now. Panel 2 above took some time to complete... the panel with the emergency stairs. But that was okay. Because panel 1 made up for it by being the quickest. All it had was the words "Dr. Ella Whitby" that I inked over Carlo's pencils. Humm... I wonder if that's considered lettering. :)

Explosion with broken glass above. And below, is a nice splash page where Deadpool opens up a fridge to get a snack.

Deadpool #43

I used templates to ink all the cars. Took quite some time to complete. It's something I like to do to make the cars looks mechanical.

More template work, brushes, and pens. Hardest part was inking that big round propeller precisely on the aircraft... No template for that, so I used a flex curve where I'll bend it to the right shape.

I could have stat some of the background on this page because they were the same in panel 1, 2 & 3. But that would be more work in Photoshop to put them all together. Inked it the old fashion way, where everything is hand inked.

Index Card 2

Not quite index cards. But I'm still calling it "Index Card" just to keep the free sketch stuff in the same category. It was one of those free sketch request I get every now and then. Click here to see my first post about these free sketches.

These were sent all the way back to Belgium. Originally, I was sent the two comic books (The Spirit and The New Warriors) along with some blank paper. The Spirit trade paperback was sorta cool because it was published in a foreign language. The New Warrior comic was all English. There was also letter asking for a Hercules sketch. There were five pieces of blank paper. So I decided I may as well sketch other stuff on them. Also did a sketch of Spider-Man, The Spirit and Batman.

Now the other drawing was something I did at the spur of the moment. I had one extra blank piece of paper and didn't know what else to draw. I wanted to sketch on all five papers since they came all the way from Belgium and going back. I thought to myself, what characters are out there that everybody knows of? Then I looked over to the left and I saw my daughters big bucket of crayons. I saw all those colors, tips of the crayon and they reminded me of a Pac-Man maze. You know... the power pellets and the bright dots. Then I said "I'm drawing Pac Man! Wouldn't that be funny when they get it back and see this!" And that's exactly what I did. After I drew the four monsters, I then drew the fourth monster being gobbled up my Pac Man! Then colored them with y daughters crayons.

Flashpoint pins

DC Comics sent me a bag of Flashpoint pins. From what the letter says, everyone who helped out with Flashpoint was sent a complete set of 16 Flashpoint pens which were available exclusively to retailers. A small token of their gratitude. What a nice gesture. In case you're wondering, underneath the bags of pin is just the back of that DC letter. Even the paper that this letter is printed on is cool, There are characters on the back of it.

Anyways... I took all the pins and pinned them on the holiday gift DC Comics sent to freelancers last year. The messenger bag with the DC logo on it. I thought I blogged about the messenger bag when I got it last year, but it must have slipped my mind. In any case, here it is now... all decked out with Flashpoint pins.

When I first got pages to work on, I was surprised to see Grifter from the WildCATS. Which is an indication that characters from the Wildstorm Universe is moving into the DC Universe.

My favorite part about working on this issue was being able to ink Grifter. First time working on the character.

My name is spelled incorrectly in this issue. "WaldOn" with an 'o' instead of the correct way, Walden with an 'e'. I don't get how that happens. My name was mispelled in issue #40, then it was correctly spelled in issue #41. Now it's back to the same mispelling in #42. The credit page must have been manually adjusted as each comic goes into publication.

Now onto the inks where I've inked over the talented Carlo Barberi.

Round 3, fight!!! Nah... that number 3 just represents the cell number in the story.

I like the sparks effect that's coming out of Deadpool's head in panel 1. Reminds me of how Arthur Adams draws his sparks.

Credit No Credit

When I write "Credit No Credit", it reminds me how some colleges offers "Credit/No Credit" in lieu of grades. Either you get the credit, or you don't.

Every now and then after I worked on a book, my name would be left out when it's published. Here's another of those books where it happened again. It's for Thor #620.1 which I blogged about here when it was originally released. Recently, I got the comps and notice the missing credit.

Here's the credits. Ironically, it's right on the bottom of the splash page I've inked.

Interestingly enough, my name was still on the comp list for the work because I was sent these comics. Tickles me every time.

This includes some of the work I've done on BRUCE WAYNE - THE ROAD HOME: OUTSIDERS. It's a fairly big book with lots of pages! Took me a bit of time to find the pages I've worked on to recall what I've contributed to it. Or, it may be just that I only inked a few pages and didn't find them in my initial flip through. In any case, it's always a nice surprise whenever I get comps. I never know what's in the box until I open it. Sorta feels like Christmas presents.

Index card 1

Years ago, someone contacted me through e-mail and asked me to draw something on a couple of index cards for them. I was so flattered, I said sure. He sent me a couple of index cards with a Self Addressed Stamped Envelope and a letter asking what he wanted drawn. I still remember what I drew... Darth Vader and Boba Fett from Star Wars.

Well, who ever that was, he posted somewhere online that I drew the cards and also posted the address to my studio. I don't know where it's posted online, but I'm sure of it. From then on, I would get these letters asking for sketches, along with a couple of index cards, and a self addressed stamped envelope. I've done numerous of these since.

One time, a father sent me a couple of photos of kids. The kids were posing on the right side of the photo in a super hero Halloween costume and I would drew characters on the left side. Sorta like Life meets Art. Very creative of the father.

Anyways, I've never made copies or took pictures of the sketch I drew. Never thought about posting them until now. So from here on out, every time I do another freebie Sketch Card, I'll post them here. I'm calling the entries, "Index Cards".

Here's one for someone in the Netherlands. He sent me a Dutch Good Luck Charm which I thought was kinda nice (see bottom left of picture). As usual, a self addressed stamped envelope and a letter. The letter asked if I can personalize it to his son, which I did for the Batman sketch.

Sketched it out in pencil, then finished it up with whatever pens I have around at the time... red ball point pen, tech pen, black & silver sharpie, blue & yellow highlighters, and a orange marker.

Double page spread below. I was talking to Carlo Barberi on the phone and told him I was inking the capsule. Then he goes and tells me he modeled that based on a light saber. I nearly fell on the floor laughing because I didn't see it before. Then we had a conversation about different light sabers.

Below is a page that I'm happy with how it turned out. I stared at this page for quite some before I started inking it. Where to apply halos so nothing gets lost. What to halo and what not to halo. How big and small the starts should be so it doesn't confuse with the rocks floating around. How am I going to ink the white speed lines.... use white ink or ink around it. Tapering out of speed lines from straight lines. A lot of planning before the inking.

Finally, Deadpool in bed...

GOTHAM CITY SIRENS #22

Helped out on a few pages of Gotham City Sirens #22 over Andres Guinaldo's pencils. All my pages are towards the end of the book.

Here one of Guinaldo's pencils before slapped in over it...

For all the times I've inked over Guinaldo, I've noticed he would draw a lot of lines when it comes to hair. Criss crossing each other, over lapping, and sometimes looking like scribbles. I would usually ink each hair line making it more readable. Dropping off lines that are unnecessary and adding others that'll make it better. Here's that same page with my inks...

Another black and white page. I like how the backgrounds in the last panel turned out. Backgrounds are fun to work on. Time consuming though.

Another page. The fingerless gloves in the first panel took the longest to complete. Cross hatching the lines while contouring to the shape of the hand.

Got a comp copy of Titans : Villains for Hire trade paperback today.

Looking through the volume, aside from the pages I've inked, it seems that all the pages were colored straight from pencils. Kinda fun looking for the pages I've worked on because they were all over the palce. The next time you're at a store and see this book, pick it up and give it a looksie. I'm sure you can tell right away which pages I've worked on even if there was no page number credits.

This is a very nice looking book. The whole format and presentation of the book is very impressive including the sketch materials in the end.

I inked 22 pages in this Trade Paperback over Claude St. Aubin's pencils. Here's a splash page...

Another page. That egg in a carton looking shell thing in the first panel took some time to ink. Had to make sure everything was lined up keeping in mine line weights and where the light source was coming from. Bottom of the page, we have some Kirby dots. It's called Kirby dots because when Jack Kirby drew comics, he would draw these black dots in various sizes to simulate and energy effect.

More Kirby dots below. The snake skin texture towards the bottom of the page was an interesting effect to do. Inked with a stippling effect. In fact, the majority of the pages had a lot of stippling going on. I used a quill for all of that. Depending on how much pressurem you can control how big or small the stippling dots can be. Something that can't be done with microns or tech pens. Unless, of course, you plan to keep switching out different sized microns/tech pens. Much quicker and more control with a quill when stippling.

Finally, this cool looking page with a Green Lantern looking fellow. Except, he doesn't have the Green Lantern logo on his chest. Just a white oval.

Helped out on a few pages over Andres Guinaldo's pencils. This was the second time I've inked Guinaldo's pencils after Gotham City Sirens #17. Turning around the inks was quick and fast!

SPIDER-GIRL #2

My inks over Ray Anthony Height's pencils. Not quite sure if the words BIG TIME is part of the working title. Thought it was SPIDER-GIRL. Or maybe it's BIG TIME SPIDER-GIRL. In any case... here's some of my inks.

One of the first Spider-Man books I've bought was Amazing Spider-Man #252. That's the issue when Spider- Man first got his new Black costume, which was an alien symbiote that later became Venom. Anyhoo... on this page, Spider Girl is wearing a black costume. Not quite Spider-Man in his black outfit, but close! My first time inking the black outfit (amazing how so little can me make me so happy).

And that's it for the costume! Below is a page where I decided to add details to the bike on the last panel. Usually when I get a page to work on that's doesn't excite me much, I look for something to do on it that'll make it fun. And the bike was something to look forward to inking.

Here's how the bike was originally pencilled on the left and my inks on the right. I even added the rest of her left foot behind the front wheel. Fun stuff to do when inking.

Finally, the best page of the lot. One with the Globlin in it. I went all out with the inks on this one. Minor fixes here and there and Wha-La!

GOTHAM CITY SIRENS #17

My inks over Andres Guinaldo's pencils. My first time inking over Guinaldo's pencils. He puts a lot of details in his work. Lots of background information.

It took much longer to finish some of the backgrounds than the characters.

After a slow start, I got used to Guinaldo's pencils and the inks started to flow quicker.

Andres Guinaldo's pencils kinda reminded me of Milo Manara's work. The way the women are drawn and the details in the backgrounds. And since this is as close as I can get to inking Manara, I had fun noodling in all the details. Exciting too!

This one's my favorite of the bunch. Lots of panels going on here. Lee Garbett did a great job on the story telling with this one page alone.

A challenging double page spread.

A bit confusing when inking this double page spread. To help out, Lee Garbett sent me the thumbnails that Grant Morrison drew to help me along the way (below). After studying Grant's Thumbnails, inking the double page spread was straight forward.

Here's my inks. This page was inked in between other pages just so I can keep it exciting and wanting to come back to it. I do that every time I get pages that has a lot of characters with a lot of details. Instead of completing it on one sitting, I spread it out.

SPIDER-MAN vs. VAMPIRES #1

Did some work for Spider-Man vs. Vampires over Roberto Castro's pencils.

Here's some of my inks. Web slinging Spidey...

Spidey vs. Vampires... This page almost got a but confusing during the inking stage. I had to add all all those white line halos in certain areas to separate foreground blacks from background blacks. Otherwise everything will mesh together and you won't see the form of the characters.

Wall crawling Spidey and a fighting ring. White lines on the building windows to keep the perspective going. The last panel was fun and took a while to complete.

Spidey and Blade. I think this is the first time I've actually worked on the character Blade. Very cool. all the time I was inking Blade, I though about Wesley Snipes and the term, "Day Walker". Strange want goes on in my head when I'm working.

SUPERMAN #704

I've inked the whole issue over Leandro Oliveira's pencils. Here's a picture of what happens to the comp copies when there's too much time on my hands.

This issue focuses on Lois Lane. Here's a splash page with her.

Lots of hair to ink especially with Lois Lane.

A habit I have while inking hair is to hold my breath. Thinking that it'll steady my body and hands to give it a much smoother/slicker line. It's not really necessary to hold my breath. Just a habit I developed. With this issue, there was a LOT of hair! So much, I decided to create a collage of all the hair to illustrate how much. By the time I finished this issue, I think I can hold my breath for minutes on end. Become a deep sea diver or preform under water escape tricks.

Lots of hair, yes? On top of that, a huge amount of tapered inking techniques.

There's even more hair in this issue that I didn't include in the collage. Like the pages below with Superman and Lois Lane.

Below you'll see a black backround next to black hair. To avoid both blacks meshing together, I added a white line in between. This separates the two blacks and pop the figures away from the background.

The background with the stars (also called Black with Stars) is done by using a toothbrush and white ink. I would spot the backgrounds in black first, wait for the ink to dry, then spatter white ink on top with a toothbrush. There so many ways create this effect. Othertimes, I would use a masking fluid instead of white ink, Work backwards ending with spotting blacks on top. Once everything dries, I just rub off the dried masking fluid and presto, the white stars are there. Finally, I go back on top with a white out pen to create the bigger white stars.

Superman's so smooth! He definitely knows how to sweep a girl off her feet. *Swoosh*

DEADPOOL #28

The second installment of a three part story. I inked the whole issue over Carlo Barberi's pencils. Here's the cover to this issue as done by Dave Johnson.

BOOOM! A splash page from this issue. Since I ink in the word "BOOOM", does that make me a letterer as well? I miss those days when penciled art use to get sent to the letterer before it gets to the inker. The letterer would ink in all the panel boarders, draw in all the word balloons, letter them, and letter/ink all the special effects that were on the page. Today, any pencilled in lettering or special effects would need to be inked in by the inker.

Another page where I though Carlo did a great job on sequential. Especially with the first three panels.

Splash pages are always fun to work on. Nice big images. The bigger the image, the easier to ink. Smaller images take more concentration especially when inking on Blue Line printouts. Bigger images, it's all crisp and clear.

Splash! I found out Carlo likes the way I taper lines over his work. So I concentrated more on that with Black Widow as shown here. Lots of tapering all over her costume which took some time. Then there's the individual bricks which took some time to complete.

Not quite a splash below. Almost. There's two smaller panels below. I've seen some people giving the term "Half Splash" on pages similar to this, especially when dealers are selling original comic art. Which made me wonder... Could car dealers sell half a car? Perhaps a "Half Loaded" vehicle, as supposed to a "Fully Loaded" one? How about food? Instead of saying, "I like a pizza with the works!", how about... "I like to order a half assed pizza?" Not much of a selling point. Anyhoo... Let me get back on track...

Here's a "DPS" as comic book people like to call Double Page Spreads. BONG! Right before I posted this here, I had the urge to manipulate the letter "B" into a "W". Having it read WONG! But then, that's just too much work to entertain my crazyness.

And the colors over it. The colorist made two version of this. In the end, everyone liked the second version below with the waves. That was voted to be printed in the issue.

SUPERMAN: LAST STAND OF NEW KRYPTON VOL. 1

Here's a Hardcover comp copy I just received. It collects some work I've done for Superman Last Stand of New Krypton #2.

Here's a couple of pages for it. First the pencils by Travis moore.

And my inks over it. Aside from the first, the following panels seems to lack backgrounds. As you can see in the pencils above, the penciller requested stats of the backgrounds from the first panel. When I'm done with the inks, here's how it looks...

And my inks over the pencils. This time, the stat was pulled from the last panel.

After I'm all done with the inks, all of that goes to the colorist, Blong, who'll cut and paste the background and color everything up. When all is said and done, this is how it looks. Comic Magic.

BRUCE WAYNE – THE ROAD HOME: OUTSIDERS

Another project where I helped out on. Five pages for this issue over Javier Saltares pencils. Here's my dandy picture of the comp copies I took.

Javier is the same person who I've inked over on Predator for Dark Horse Comics last year. Before Predator, I've inked him on 'Avataars: Covenant of Shield' for Marvel.

I think Javier is the only penciller whom I've inked over for all three DC, Marvel, and Dark Horse comics. All of which were helping out on a few pages because of deadlines. I was already comfortable with Javier's pencils so I was confident going forth.

Some of the pencils were sketchy which gave me an opportunity to go in there and tighten things up a bit.

Add some lines here, hatch here, cross hatch there, textures everywhere. Which was a lot of fun.

Before I knew it, I finished all five pages in one night. Of course, when got the FedEx package in the morning, I worked all the way until the next morning without any sleep. There was a tight deadline to finsih the five pages over the weekend when I got the pages on a Thursday. Still, I was having so much fun, I decided to work through the night. By the time I was finished before the weekend, I surprised myself as well as the Editors.

And then I went to sleep in the morning after I turned in the pages and woke up in time for dinner.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: BACK IN QUACK #1

Quack-Quack! Twip-Twip! Those are the sounds I was making while working on Amazing Spider-Man; Back in Quack #1. You know... A duck "quacks" and when Spider-Man spins a web, the sound it makes is, "twip". Annn-neee-waaay.... Here's the cover to this issue.

There were two pencillers on this issue which I've inked both of. The first twelve pages were pencilled by Mark Brooks. Here are some of my inks over Mark.

I dig the way Mark draws Spider-Man. He makes him look cool and modern without the need to change anything. Below is another nice page especially the last panel with Web-Head again.

Then there the page below with the backgrounds. Mark apologized in advance about me inking this page because of all the backgrounds. I told him I welcome it. Bring it on! I don't know about other inkers out there, but inking backgrounds is very therapeutic for me. I enjoy it. Not that I need therapy or anything. The inks just seem to flow automatically.

The last ten pages were pencilled by Ray Anthony Height. Below are a couple of pages that we did together.

I remember working on this issue thinking.... Man... I'm turning around these pages quick! Faster than what I'm used to. What's up with that?? I looked back at the issue and noticed all those characters with the round smiley faces. Just a circle for the head, two dots for eyes, and a curved line for the mouth. How easy is that? I hardly had to ink any faces with eyeballs, nose, mouth, ears, and hair.

Then I realized, when it comes to faces, I spend a lot of time on them. Making sure everything is inked and chiseled correctly.

After I finished all the inks, there was a last minute adjustment request from Marvel. Below, I did some photoshop drawing/inking for the correction. On the left is the original page before, and the right is the after printed page. See if you can find the difference.

DEADPOOL #27

Here's the cover to this issue.

I inked the whole book over Carlo Barberi's pencils. Actually, over blue line printouts over Carlo's high res scans that he sent me. Here's one of the pages where I spent more time inking upside down. The actual page upside down, not me hanging lover my head like a bat. Mainly because Deadpool was upside down.

Working on this issue brings back a lot of memories. One of the first books I've worked on for Marvel many years ago was on Deadpool. So it was nice to be back on the title again. Here's a splash page from this issue with Black Widow, Steve Rogers, and Moon Knight.

On top of being able to work on Deadpool, another bonus was being able to work with Carlo Barberi again. Carlo and I did a run together on JLU (Justice League Unlimited) for DC Comics a while back. I've always been following Carlo's work. Even after our JLU run, I would hint him that we should work together again. And here we are today.

Below is a double page spread from the issue. I was a little rusty inking Carlo after all these years. After a few pages into it, I got back into the groove. By the time I got to this double pager, the inks were flowing better. I'm especially happy with how the tapered lines are coming out of the blacks. In the earlier pages, I was pulling them out with a quill. Towards the end, I was working that effect with brush since I started to understand the pencils more.

Carlo's gotten so much better since our JLU days. Lots of fun inking over him again. Here's the same page all colored up by Marte Garcia.

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA #49

Another book I worked on which I didn't get credit. In the credits section, there were nine inkers who are listed, except for my name. Maybe there wasn't enough room for another name since there was so many or it was just a last minute deadline crunch and was an oversight. Happens every now and then.

I was sent comp copies, so somewhere in the system, it knows I've contributed. Otherwise, I wouldn't have gotten comp copies at all. Here's a picture of the books. Two of the copies are variants. On the top, I opened up to the four pages I've inked.

And here are the four pages in black and white. My inks over Pow Rodrix's pencils. First the double page spread, which is actually two pages attached to each other.

Then here's the other two pages. Both splash pages! This one, I had fun with the black background.

Finally, the splash page. Well... Not suite a splash page since there's one panel on the top left. It's a nice page. I'm gonna call it the "Almost Splash Page".

Batman vs. Spawn commission

JLA / Witchblade

Here's an oldie. Something I've inked many moons ago. This was a crossover book between DC Comics and Top Cow with characters from the JLA and Witchblade. It was for a prestige format comic with about 48 pages of story. Here's the inked black and white cover along with the printed comic.

At the time, penciller, Mark Pajarillo, and I was the fill in art team for JLA. Anytime the regular art team needed an break, we stepped in. When JLA/Witchblade popped up, we were asked to do the book.

Around that time, Pajarillo was freelancing for DC Comics as well as working in house for Top Cow Comics. Him working with other inkers on Top Cow books such as Darkness, Tomb Raider, and Witchblade. Speaking of which, Pajarillo and I also worked on a Witchblade/Tomb Raider #1/2 comic around the same time.

Anyhoo, he wanted me to ink his pencils with the same look that Top Cow comic was publishing at the time. Sending me copies of other inkers and what they did.

Along with that look, everything was inked with a quill. Very edgy, angular, and crisp. Take a look at the hands in the third panel below. You can imagine how I bounced the quill all over the place to ink that one panel.

Then we get to this page. Talk about inter company crossover. Pencils by Mark Pajarillo up top on Wonder Woman and Dave Finch below on Superman. This Superman was Finch's first ever published Superman Drawing which I inked. Mark needed help on the deadline and just handed the page over to Finch to help him out. Finch didn't get credit in the book as Pajarillo requested. Looking at Supes, you can tell it's drawn by Finch.

Good times working on this crossover book. Publishers working together to publish a comic. Characters from different universe meeting up in the same book. Artist from different publishers working on the same book. Then we get Wonder Woman wearing the Witchblade. Crossover Galore!

AGE OF HEROES #4

Here's another Age of Heroes issue I worked on. I inked eleven pages over Shawn Moll's pencils for this issue #4. Here's the cover to the issue...

The story is about Lady Black Panther. Here's the opening page with Aim Agents getting a can of whup-ass. I went all out with the tapering of lines in the last panel. Having too much fun.

Rogue commission piece over Arthur Adams

Another commission piece I did over Arthur Adams' blue pencil drawings. Not Blue-Line printouts, but and actual hand drawing that Arthur did with a blue pencil.

All of this was inked with different tip sized microns. I spotted the blacks with a brush. Like the other Art Adams commission pieces I've inked in the past, I referenced how he would ink some of his own backgrounds. A time consuming cross hatching texture. The pencil sketch didn't have any backgrounds. I wanted to give it a background to look as close to the pieces that Arthur would draw himself.

My thought process was to leave some whites in the background because I didn't want it to mesh with the blacks that was on the figure. Areas on the figure that was white, I let the cross hatching background touch the figure. Areas on the figure which were black (like the front of her hood and bottom of boobies), I left the background white. At the same time, doing a fade from black to white with the background so it transitions better. The extra details on the hair, tapered lines, and cross hatching, I referenced other work that Arthur has done.

Lots of planning and referencing before inking. I even lightly pencilled in areas to show myself where I want certain details to be. In a way, it's almost like doing finishes.

Here's how it looks when I got the piece. Lightly drawn in blue pencil. Still beautiful as with any and all of Arthur's work. Hard to see, but enough for me to work with.

JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA: TEAM HISTORY

Just got publishers copies of another book I did some work in. Hardcover for Justice League of America: Team History. My inks over Mark Bagley's pencils.

Here's a inset panel I inked. The panel was then inserted into a full page that someone else inked. Not sure exactly which page.

Purgatori Commission

Here's a commission piece I've inked over Al Rio pencils. One of the characters from Chaos Comics named Purgatori.

It's actually from a preliminary drawing for a cover where the original art size was 7x10 inches (as shown below). I was requested to ink this in full 11X17 size. Took the high-res scan, blew it up to 11x17 on Photoshop, digitally touched up some of the unnecessary rendering and lines, and printed it out on Blue Line for inks.

You know what's refreshing about inking over blue lines? No erasing necessary. Don't even need to touch the eraser. Once I'm finished with the inks, it's DONE! FINITO!

TEAM-UPS OF THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD VOL. 1 Hardcover

Artist copy of Team-Ups of the Brave and the Bold Volume 1 in which I did some work over Justiniano's pencils. Here's the cover...

Below is one of the page for this volume where I used templates to ink in all the background including each and every bottle... not to mention each bottle's labels. Crazy... I know.

Lots of time spent on that page. When it comes to minute details like that, I like to make sure everything's in there and nothing's left out. Every inked line has to have a reason for being there. Every stroke of the ink has a beginning and a end. That said... fun with spotting blacks and cross hatching.

Some of my inks for this issue. Here's Absorbing man.

Now we have Marie Hill, Sharon Carter, and Victoria Hand, the three Avengers Liasons. How do I know who they are? I pulled that info from here.

Inking Absorbing Man was fun. Every time he absorbs something he touches, his body would become that texture. Which gives me the opportunity to play with inking textures. Throughout the pages, I've inked Absorbing Man with different tools (brushes, technical pens, quills, micron pens) just to give them each a different look. Here's a stone sandy texture where I used a brush and technical pens.

Below is Absorbing man with a more organic texture in panel 1 and part of panel 2. Inked those with brushs and microns. After he gets hit by a chandelier in panel 2, he absorbs and gets the jeweled look and I went in there and inked him with a quill pen. Notice in panel 2 where he's smashing the chandelier, I've inked his body with a brush, then with his left arm, I've inked with a pen. Giving that arm more angular chiseled feel along with the rest of the panels following.

Finally, here's our friendly neighbor Spider-Man.

Spider-Man, Spider-Man, Does whatever a spider can, spins a web, any size... Just so he can lie on a hammock.

BATMAN: THE RETURN OF BRUCE WAYNE #4

Batman! The Return of Bruce Wayne!! Numbeeeer... 4!!! I inked this whole issue over Georges Jeanty's pencils. A whopping 32 pages! Great fun! Here are copies of this issue...

I was also sent variant editions of the same comic. Different cover... same Bat Channel.

Interior pages I worked on in all it's glory...

Working with Georges on this issue, we were already under a tight deadline stepping into it. Georges told me it's going to rain on this whole issue. I just assumed he meant the deadlines were going to be very tight and it'll be a lot of hard work. You know...like the terms.. 'rain on your parade' or 'bring the rain'. Just gotta be up to speed with the work.

Well... when the pages starting to show up on my door step, one by one, I realized Georges meant that literally... It's going to rain on this whole issue. Almost every page, it was raining. I even added more rain just because. Some rain here, a little over there, white rain on top of black inks. Even more raind to this double page spread...

Yes, that's Jonah Hex on panel two of the double page spread above. In the rain.

As the pages kept rolling in, I was rooting for better weather. Cloudy, partly cloudly, or even sunny. I started to tune into my local news to see what the forecast will bring. As usual, they're predictions are never correct. More rain! Inches of water! Rain drops and puddles everywhere!

Still, Batman looks cool under the rain. "I'm Batman..."

Whip in some colors, give it a crack of lightning for the background, throw in some crecits, and this is what happens...

Here's a beautiful splash page with so many elements happening. In the raim, Batgirl lands on a parachute creating a splash on the ground in the shape of the Bat Logo....which will be used to place the credits upon publication.

Bunch of Barbs

A while back when I started working with Lee Garbett on Batgirl, I did some sample inking. Lee sent me a high resolution file of Barbara Gordon from Batgirl #11 we were working on. Here's the drawing of Barbara...

At the time, we were developing an inking style for his pencils. Lee asked if I could ink Barbara as a test page. I was happy to give it a whirl. Not only was it fun, I wanted to challenge myself and decided to ink it in SIX completely different styles.

I photoshopped the penciled piece and placed them next to each other all nicely on an 11x17 page to be printed out in blue line for inking. Kinda giving it an Andy Warhol feel to the art, which made it an exciting task to complete. I slapped ink over the images and numbered each image as follows...

#1 was inked with all brush in heavy thick to thins around the holding line. Interior lines were inked with a brush going thin.

#2 was ink with all brush, only this time, I gave it a lighter softer touch throughout.

#3 The holding lines were inked with a brush giving it an angular edge to it. Interiors were inked with a quill. Crisper and angular.

#4 The holding lines were inked with a brush giving it a thick bold flat outline. Interior lines were also brush work.

#5 was inked all with a quill. At the same time, giving the whole image an angular feel, not to mention broken lines and lots of dots for the imagination to complete the lines. Lots of flicking with the quill from thick to thin and back.

#6 was inked completely inked with microns in different tip sizes.

For as long as I have been inking, I can always use any combinations of brush, quill, microns, or any of the tools individually and make them look exactly like each of the Barbara's above. After a while of working with the tools you have, you learn that each brush, quill, or pen can ink something with a certain look quickly and more efficiently. Give me a black ball point pen and I can still ink it looking like a comic book page. It'll just take twice or three times as long to complete. Knowing what tools to use, just speed things up.

Anyhoo, after the Bunch of Barb exercise, the both of us liked how option #2 turned out and we went that direction. When it came time to ink over the original pencils, here's the result...

WORLD OF WARCRAFT BOOK 3

Hardcovers! I've inked 44 pages over Mike Bowden's pencils. This was an exciting project to work on not only because it was a WOW (World Of Warcraft) book, but also my first time working with Wildstorm.

Below are some nice inked pages for your viewing pleasure.

This one, I went all out and crosshatched the shadows in the background. Mike Bowden indicated blacks, but I figure... what's the harm in cross hatching it? If it doesn't look good, I can always black it out later. Turns out, everyone dug it!

This one's a double page spread. Every time I work on a double page spread, it feels like it takes a long time to finish. Then I sit back and realize, it should be a long time. It's inking two pages! Still, If feels like a long time because to me, it's one page. Given it's two pages attached together, But still one giant page. Often times, I would need to fold the page back on the attachment and ink in like regular size. Double page spreads are huge! One time, I've inked a commission piece that was four pages big! 22x34 is size! HUGE! Anyhoo, that's another story for another time. Back to WOW...

Finally, not quite a splash page. This is a patch page for another page. What's a patch page? Sometimes after artwork is finished, there may be editorial or licensing adjustment requests. When that happens, new artwork would be drawn on another page which will then be moved over to the original image.

You're probably thinking, "Why not just erase the drawing and redraw it on the same page?" In this case, the original page (see below) was sent to me for inking before hand. During editorial or licensing, I was asked not ink panel two and wait for a patch page. I'll ink the rest of it, wait for the page above and ink that. When I'm finished, I would then send all that to the colorist (or production) and they'll piece it together for the printed book. Kinda neat how patch pages work, eh?

BATGIRL #11

Batgirl #11 is out in stores! My inks over Lee Garbett's pencils. This was the first time I've worked with Lee and I must say he's a blast to work with. A very talented and creative individual. You should check out his blog. Lots of fun stuff. www.leegarbett.blogspot.com

From the get go, we hit it off and started to create a inking style for the overall art. There were two art teams for this issue. I inked Lee Garbett's part of the book which was the first fourteen pages.

With the pages I inked, you can almost see the inking style morph (you'll have to pick up the book to see the rest of the pages). For example, in the earlier pages, I used straight edges for all backgrounds and inked the characters in a bold, almost flat outline. Using both brush and pen.

Towards the end, I put away all the straight edges and free handed all the backgrounds. The figures, I opted out the thick bold outlines and give them more of a line width bounce all around. Almost brush work exclusively with minor pen.
