Speedball Super Black India Ink

The fine folks over at Speedball Art Products sent me a free sample. A two ounce bottle of Speedball Super Black India Ink.
I've never used this brand before. Looking forward to trying it out and seeing how it compares to some of the other inks I've used in the past. I like the name Speedball, maybe it could make me ink in super speed.

  1. I tryed this stuff way back. great for blacks but too thick, you may have to water it down.

  2. That's a good idea. I'm courious if the ink holds well. As long as the blacks doenn't turn grey, it's should be good.

  3. Love this ink - always got on better with it than Higgins Black Magic, but it's all preference (and comes down to batches as well - I've chucked whole bottles after the first use on more than one occasion). Looks like they've got sexy new packaging and branding lol.

  6. I don't really have anything substantive to say regarding the quality of these inks as I'm not an insider like you guys, but I like the way the bottle's design looks as if it hasn't changed since the '60s. I could almost see Charles Schulz using that very product in his study.

  7. I've used this brand before and while it inked fine it had a funny problem (at least for me) where it leaked out of the container very easily, sometimes even when I haven't been handling it! I don't know if they've fixed that with the super black, but for me personally it got irritating whenever I was trying to bring it anywhere.

  8. Most of the ink bottles I use has an dropper where I can suck and drop ink. This speedball ink doesn't have that. It gives it the old fashion feel for an ink bottle.

Most inks I've dealt with leak when I'm traveling with it. It's because of the change in pressure and the bottle being rolled in every direction. Star Wars artist, Jan Duursema, give me a tip one time about that. When she travels, she would use tape and wrap it around the bottle and the cover to keep ink from leaking. I've tried it myself and it works wonders.
